RRI Energy's Indian River Plant Named Business Partner of the Year By Florida Elementary Schools

Indian River's Petra Craig Chosen Mentor of the Year at Atlantis

TITUSVILLE, FLA. – January 14, 2009 − RRI Energy's Indian River Generating Station was named "Business Partner of the Year" for the third year in a row by Atlantis Elementary School and for the first time by Enterprise Elementary School. Both are considered exemplary schools in Port St. John, Fla.

The Indian River plant, located in Titusville, Fla., and nearby Atlantis Elementary began their partnership in 2006 as the school prepared for the Port St. John Holiday Parade. RRI Energy volunteers helped build a student float and donated $10,000 to set up the "SuccessMaker" lab, a computer tutorial that helps students improve math and reading skills. The Indian River volunteers continue to raise school funds, mentor students, judge science projects and even assist with parking-lot security at the school's fall festival.

"Anything I ask, they do. They've been incredible to us," said Vanessa Judson, assistant principal at Atlantis Elementary.

Enterprise Elementary School also benefits from the partnership. "RRI Energy's contributions have touched all of us at the school," said Terry Lee, principal at Enterprise. "They sponsor our 'Professional Development Day' teacher training session, which helps educators prepare for the new school year, support literacy efforts for approximately 100 students by providing books for our after-school book clubs, and assist with the school's 'Hands-On Math' program."

In 2008, through a $10,000 donation by RRI Energy's Indian River plant to the Brevard County Schools Foundation, Atlantis and Enterprise each received $5,000. The plant donated $5,000 to Space Coast High School, another partnership, and $10,500 to other school programs.

Petra Craig"I never realized the tremendous need that schools have for volunteers," said Petra Craig, senior budget analyst at Indian River Plant and Atlantis' Mentor of the Year. Craig mentors two students and spends approximately five hours a week at Atlantis. "Many of our employees donate individually, and as a group the plant collects pull-tabs from soft drinks to assist Atlantis fund-raising efforts," said Craig.

Indian River Control Operator Jim Courchene played a major role in establishing the mentoring program at the station, and Chris Landers, also a control operator, volunteers as a mentor at Atlantis as well. RRI Energy's Indian River Plant also has donated administrative funds to help offset costs associated with the volunteer program.
