Commercial Operations & Origination

The Commercial Operations and Origination group is responsible for optimizing the value of our power generation and related assets. We work closely with our Plant Operations group to economically dispatch RRI Energy’s generation fleet and manage the associated fuel and emissions requirements.

Commercial Operations sells electricity, generation capacity and ancillary service products to a variety of power customers, including:

  • independent power producers
  • power grids/ISOs (independent system operators)
  • investor-owned utilities
  • municipalities
  • cooperatives
  • banks and trading companies
  • other companies that serve end users

Flexibility in the marketplace

Because RRI Energy's generation facilities are not subject to traditional cost-based regulation, electricity capacity and ancillary services are generally sold at market-determined prices. These products are sold in bilateral and ISO hour-ahead and day-ahead markets and forward bilateral markets.

Our origination group purchases and sells energy products and services tailored to meet customer needs. To ensure an adequate supply of fuel, we purchase natural gas, coal and fuel oil for our generation plants from a variety of suppliers under daily, monthly and longer-term contracts. We also contract for a variety of transportation and storage arrangements under short-term, long-term, firm and interruptible agreements. Our company also secures financial power transmission rights through auctions.

Strength in our network

RRI Energy is a member of several Regional Transmission Organizations and Independent System Operators organizations including the PJM Interconnection, the Midwest ISO, and the California ISO. We also participate in the energy markets in the southeast, primarily Florida.

The Commercial Operations group works with these organizations to ensure a safe, reliable supply of electricity to our customers.
